“So now I am older,
Than my mother and father,
When they had their daughter,
Now what does that say about me.
Oh how could I dream of,
Such a selfless and true love,
Could I wash my hands of?
Just lookin out for me” — Montezuma - Fleet Foxes (via dannyliberty)

A few hours ago, I landed in Los Angeles, turned on my phone, and confirmed what you already know. Sony Pictures Television is replacing me as showrunner on Community, with two seasoned fellows that I’m sure are quite nice - actually, I have it on good authority they’re quite nice, because…

Almost thirty.

Back in 2007, I was making a video every day and posting it to youtube. I did this for almost a full year until I got distracted by a boy.

I turn thirty next Saturday and I’m trying to think of something similar I can do for every day of my thirtieth year. So far I’ve thought of doing a blog a day, or a video a day, or setting 365 goals at varying levels of arbitrariness and completing one a day. Maybe just writing a minimum of 500 words a day would be enough. I have very few outlets for creativity and I need to harness them.

Here’s what I remember about shooting a video a day, good and bad:

1. Once my friends knew what I was doing, they were super supportive and even somewhat came out of the woodwork to be a part of the videos.

2. I traveled a lot. Probably the most I’ve ever traveled in a year. Part of that was dating a rich guy who bought me plane tickets to see him, but most of it was out of my own pocket.

3. My friends who were far away felt like they had a real connection with me, even though I was far from home and living in Phoenix at the time.

4. I was exhausted nearly all the time.

5. I felt lonely sometimes because though my friends and family were watching the videos and keeping up with what I was doing, I wasn’t giving them the same attention back. That was somewhat isolating.

6. Creepy guys made me feel creepy. On the commenting grossness scale, YouTube is rivaled only by 4chan.

7. I got really comfortable with how I look and got really good at editing.

8. I got positive comments every day. For somebody externally motivated, that was extremely important to my success.

9. At my lowest weight, I looked pretty cute. I know I can get there again.

10. I need a structured creative outlet or I’ll never get anything done. If I put a timeline on these projects (one per day) I can’t “polish the diamond” forever and I have to post something, no matter how disjointed or unfinished it feels. Sometimes it’ll end up good anyway, but if I hate it, hey, I only had a day.

Suggestions? Ideas? I only have until Friday night to make up my mind.

Gretna City Administrator Fired, Then Arrested -

The Gretna City Administrator was arrested for suspicion of theft after a $1,000 fund set aside for senior citizens’ lunches had dwindled to less than twenty dollars without any of it having been spent on the seniors. Here is one of the geniuses on the local NBC affiliate’s website who is exercising his right to free speech:

This is nothing more than partisan politics. Anyone could easily used the wrong card by mistake. You people want more oversight? More government??? Just like St. Reagan said, “Government can’t solve your problems, government IS the problem.”

Candidly: what a moron.

The former City Administrator is a registered Republican. The state auditor who conducted the investigation of Gretna’s accounting practices is a Republican. The current mayor of Gretna is a Republican. The Gretna City Council is comprised of two Republicans and two Democrats who voted to fire Lawry.

This is going to be surprising to probably nobody, but I’m a pretty liberal person and seeing comments like this on a story about an individual who allegedly misappropriated funds really, really annoys me. This idiot commenter states that we need less government oversight in a story that highlights the exact reason government oversight exists in the first place.

My opinion now and forever will be that partisan politics have no place in local politics. This person is bad and they should feel bad.

(Full disclosure: The now-fired Colleen Lawry was one of the participants in the Leadership Sarpy program I was in charge of when I worked for the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce. I remember her as being intelligent but abrupt and always well-manicured.)

Part of my job is to meet with all the eyeglass frame vendors and choose what we’re going to sell in the optical. (I also do marketing, community outreach, retina photographs and corneal scans. It’s a small office.)
When I’m picking out frames, I like to think about the person who’ll end up getting them. I told my coworker the guy who picks out these Mad Men-era glasses is my future boyfriend, so now she winks at me any time somebody tries them on.
